Kol Nidre Service
Kol Nidre Service

Tucker, Richard

The prayer service for the eve of the Day of Atonement is distinguished for its solemnity, its poetic beauty and its inspiring power to life the worshiper towards G-d. The theme is the power of repentance and G-d's willingness to accept the sinner once he atones for failures of the past and resolves to live the life of purity and holiness in the future. The Kol Nidre chant has impressed itself upon the Jewish conscience because it recalls to the Jew the tragic eras when many Jews were forced to accept other faiths, vowing their allegiance to them under duress, whereas at heart they remained loyal to their G-d. The Kol Nidre was the instrument by which they asked G-d's forgiveness and the annulment of such compulsory vows. The traditional themes of the High Holy Days upon which Sholom Secunda, the composer and conductor for this release, based his musical setting were transmitted orally through the ages and in modern times serves as inspiration to many composers, Jewish and non-Jewish alike. The present recording was the first stereophonic rendition of the prayers for the eve and Day of Atonement. "If you have a sweet voice, glorify G-d with the gift He bestowed upon you," was the challenge of the sages since the days of the Holy Temple. Richard Tucker was the best qualified singer of his day to answer that holy call. Narration by Ben Irving. (Copyright 1959 Sony Music)
