Land of Our Fathers

Diaspora Yeshiva Band

This release is Diaspora's best studio recording and is a testament to their great musical accomplishments. It was the fifth of six popular albums they recorded between 1976 and 1983. By the time this album was recorded in 1981, the group had matured in their musical proficiency and as recording artists, and were beginning to incorporate klezmer, jazz, and impressionistic elements into their music. It is also one of the first "unplugged" albums ever produced. Musically, the album is dominated by Avraham's country-rock influences and Ben Zion Solomon's American folk, bluegrass and klezmer influences. Ruby Harris' versatility and adaptability on violin, mandolin, and harmonica are indespensible to the overall sound. Simcha Abramson's sax work weaves its way through some of mellower pieces and creates a "commentary" of its own. Vocally, Avraham's and Ben Zion's solos and harmonies prove to be strong, distinctive and unique. Gedalia Goldstein's solid drumming and Ted Glaser's "bass-ics" provide solid support without overpowering the album's acoustic qualities. What really set The Diaspora Yeshiva Band apart from most other musical groups of their time was that they lived a truly inspiring Torah life, and played in the Land of Our Fathers.
