Traditional Jewish Memories

Silberman, Benedict & Chorus

The hearts and minds of people find voice in its songs. Unfortunately, the voices of the Jewish folk who lived for hundreds of years in Central and Eastern Europe prior to World War 2 are perilously near to being stilled especially in this country. The reasons are not far to seek. The small town (shtetl), the center of Jewish life, has been largely wiped out. The human transmission belts of this culture were pitifully thinned out when six million Jews perished in Hitler's holocaust. Aggresive new ideologies and a quicker tempo of assimilation have played their part. Young Jews, understandably, turn from the bleak existence of their grandparents and great-grandparents to bask in the accomplishments of Israel. Their Jewishness is too often reduced to the observance of holidays and dietary laws, unenriched by the enduring bonds with their forefathers that songs out of the past can supply. Undoubtedly, it is good thing that the horizons of a Jew are now wider than the shtetl and that he no longer thinks he knows all there is to know of the world. Emancipation, however, brings the danger of breaking the strong links of memory that have united Jews through two thousand years of their history. It is the aim of this recording to pay tribute to the Jews of the shtetl and to make vivid their rigors, joys and steadfastness of purpose. (Copyright Legacy International/TKO Records)
